Those of you who have tried getting their hair cut in foreign places will immediately know the problems! The first time was in Bangkok. We both went into the salon, Jon was whisked away immediately and had a very presentable cut and blow-dry job! I chose a non-Thai looking stylist, thinking she might have some idea of European hair. It wasn't too bad at the side but when it came to the front, she didn't know what to do with my natural "kink" so she plastered some sort of jel on it and flattened it.

Well, I couldn't get out of the shop fast enough and ran back to the apartment to wash it out (never mind it was over 100 degrees! Jon was struggling to keep up with me saying "it looks really nice at the back". Never mind the BACK, I don't see that. Fortunately, it did bounce back up again after a good shampooing.

The next haircut was at a local hairdresser's, near the house. It will be handy, I said, as we trotted off. I had a wonderful shampoo, conditioner, massage session then she even presented me with a magazine (2004 but what the heck). We agreed on a "ruffled" style in layers which suits my hair. "The same?" she asked - "The same" I agreed. She then proceeded to chop it along the back and front and blow-dried into a Thai bob, not at all like the picture and a style that doesn't suit my hair. Hairdressers have tried before and failed! Once again, Jon got a really good cut. Why are things always so much easier for men?

Anyway, it was less than a fiver for both of us and, needless to say, the Thai bob didn't last long. A few days later, third time lucky, I found a salon in Chiang Mai centre. There were a few European in there. I explained what I wanted, "layers" she said - "Yes please" I said!
