Bridge over the River Kwai

Today we drove to Kanchanaburi to see the famous Bridge over the River Kwai. It's about 120 km east of Bangkok along very busy American type roads. The bridge is not the one in the film (that was shot in Sri Lanka) but it is the one that was bombed in World War 11. Apparently, it was repaired soon after the war. There are several museums in the town but we didn't go inside. It's very moving seeing the war graves, which are as usual beautifully attended. The whole area is very touristy so we decided to head further north to Erawan Falls. These are listed as being outstanding but, quite honestly, even little old England has more spectacular ones!

However, the heat was definitely not like England as we trekked up at the hottest part of the day! The monkeys in the trees made fun of us. Here come another pair of idiots! It would have been helpful if the guide book had said to bring swimwear as dozens of Thai families were having a whale of a time jumping in the pools. We thought best not strip off. We know that nude bathing is illlegal and we haven't heard good reports of Thai jails. Also, there was a film crew in the area, we were not prepared to bear our buttocks for at least 10Bahts!

Driving through the National Park was stunning, mountains, rivers and beautiful blossoms in shades of pinks, purples and yellows. Also, there were not many tourists, I suppose most of them stay with the popular sites but we can recommend this part of the trip.
